Male Medium Armor Concept 02 by psypher101 Male Medium Armor Concept 02 by psypher101
Redesign of [link]

Made a lot of changes to the armor and weapons. Kept some of the overall style intact. Added a background and color. This scene is meant to communicate a desert deployment.

The background was a photo I got from google images then painted over. In the original photo the ground had snow and there were cars, so it's heavily modified at this point.

Hope you guys enjoy!

Yeah, the heavy armor is more of a Mech suit than body armor, kinda like the Iron Man Hulk Buster armor. I really need to revisit that concept. I think that's what I'll do tonight! Yeah buddy!

Nice pic, I can only imagine the kickback from those guns on the guy though, lol

I imagine they don't fire on the fly. They would only really make practical sense if the suit had a special firing mode that makes use of an anchor support. Something like what mobile crane's and drilling machines have.

Woah, this is the medium armor? I don't want to know how scary the heavy is. The guns don't look realistic, but they do look cool so I'll give you that. Good painting technique, you've got great texture in the picture.

The heavy concepts will be redesigned in a few weeks.

The guns definitely aren't realistic, but I could probably explain how something like that might exist in a fictional universe with high technology. As it stands I just wanted something that looked rediculous! Haha.

Thanks for the feedback.

Warhammer is definitely an influence of mine. I don't play the table top game, but I'm a fan of the art style. I am planning on buying the Space Marine video game for XBOX.

Ha ha. I know right? All I can say is that it's kind of like a mini Gundam. Just imagine a third layer over this armor with added armor and more ordinance... Hulk Buster Iron Man is the most similar.

I'll have a redesign of the heavy suit in a few weeks. I want to work on the female medium next, the the light armor and I'll finally move to the heavy.

Love the general design of this thing. The armor and forearm guns look intimidating as hell, and I love the color scheme. Not so sure about the guns on the back. They're so impractically huge and are held at such a bizarre angle, they almost give a comical feel to an otherwise realistic image. Then again, the idea that a suit like this could actually support and use weapons of that size makes it all the more terrifyingly awesome.

wait, medium armor?
...
What's the heavy armor look like?

Thanks for the feedback. It's true the guns on the back are a little rediculous in size, but it should be noted they aren't ballistic in nature, like the chain guns. The Auxillary guns are actually high energy output kinetic weapons that double as a booster system. That allows the wearer of the armor the ability to jump at near super human capabilities. On the down side. When used as an offensive ordinance they have huge recoil and require the operator to take a stationary deployment stance, effectively neutralizing movement and turning him/her into a small artillary type asset.

As for the heavy armor. I guess you'll just have to see right? LOL.

Looks nice, warm saturated coloring really suits you. The only thing is that the armor could use some more sharp bits and bobs; you know like Serial Numbers, rivets, and the like. Also, the center is a bit asymmetrical. I hope I'm not coming off as an asshole (especially when I pale in comparison), but you sound like you really want to perfect your craft, and I want to help :D.

I may increase the resolution of the image and go back through to add some small tight details, like the rivets you described. As it stands this is just a conceptual painting and it's meant to be loose and suggestive for a reason. In production, as Feng Zhu describes, it's important not to over commit to a specific design element as it will likely be changed. For all I know, I may come back to this next year and completely change it again.

As for the armor being asymmetrical, that's due to the use of perspective. The figure's left side is turning away from the camera, so most of the stuff there either rescedes or is blocked by something else. The chest areas sticks out a bit farther than the abdomen area, perhaps I should have painted in a cast shadow to communicate this.

I appreciate the feedback. It's nice to know what other people see when they look at my art.

Okay, it's just that when I zoomed in I thought I saw two handles sticking out of the lower torso, I guess I was mistaken. Also, if you want good feedback, try conceptart.org (if you haven't already). Those guys are brutally honest professionals, and I think you'll appreciate their word far more than mine.

Also... Notice how you thought you saw something that wasn't there? It proves that keeping a conceptual piece loose allows it to breathe. It gives the piece energy that viewers can interpret how ever they choose to. That singular concept makes concept art quite exciting when you think about it.

I appreciate any feedback I get. I do have a concept.org profile, I should probably update my gallery there with the new stuff.

I didn't mean to sound like a jerk in my last response. What you should know is I defend all my design choices. It's not so much a habit as a professional practice. Being able to identify the fundamentals of design in my work, regardless of how flawed is a great exercise for me. One that helps me to self critique as I work.

I guess. I still like to hear about it. If I wanted a definitive design I would have started with a very clear and detailed line art. Similar to what I did with the Jes Armor concepts. The only down side there is that there isn't much room for speculation or creative exploration. It's kind of set in stone.

Well, I suppose with the wider streets nowadays, there's definitely room for a heavy. :)

Haha. My thoughts exactly. Not that a narrow street could stop this guy. The auxillary arms, that hold his heavy cannons, are designd to fold up vertically onto his back. Whether or not he could enter a building with low ceilings is a different story.
